General Meeting. Guest speaker Max Burke will present, "A Photographic Journey into Idaho History". Max has been volunteering doing photo scanning for the Idaho State Historical Society for six plus years. He has prepared a digital projected program that will show you what the Idaho of Yesteryear was like. Subjects will be diversified and numerous, including old buildings, towns, people, transportation and much more. Emphasis will be on Boise and the surrounding valley. All pictures are from the archives of the Idaho Historical Society. The program will conclude with a short show featuring Max's pictures taken during the recent Idaho Outdoor Association hike down the Snake River. All persons on that trip will appear in this final part of Max's program. You won't want to miss this opportunity to see these photographs.
March 13,
2012 at 7:00 PM:
General Meeting. Guest speaker Matt Giovanni, PH. D., will present "An
introduction to the Peregrine Fund's new citizen science initiative: The
American Kestrel Partnership". American Kestrel populations are experiencing
long-term declines in North America, and existing data are insufficient for
understanding the causes. The American Kestrel Partnership is an
international research network designed to generate data, models, and
conservation plans for kestrel habitat and populations at large spatial
scales. The Partnership unites the data-generating capacity of citizen
scientists with the data-analysis expertise of professional scientists by
promoting research collaboration among citizen scientists, universities,
government agencies, conservation organizations, schools, and businesses.
The Partnership also fosters long-term conservation values and appreciation
of science by engaging the public with hands-on research experiences. This
presentation will share details about the Partnership and explain how you
can participate in this exciting research and conservation initiative.
There's a very good possibility that Matt will bring a trained kestrel for
the audience to enjoy.

7:00 PM:
Join us for an IOA openhouse.
The festivities will be Mardi Gras themed and guests are welcome to dress
the part. Delicious food will be served including: red beans and rice, King
cake, spinach balls, crab dip, deviled eggs and Hurricane punch. If punch
isn't your thing, feel free to bring beverages of your choice. Everyone is
encouraged to bring friends. Also, the IOA plans to engage in some outdoor
stewardship projects in the near future. We would really like to hear from
our members and friends regarding any ideas for projects to consider. If
you, or anyone you know, would like to become directly involved in such
projects, please consider joining our organization. Frankly, the more
members we have, the more we can accomplish.
Feb 11, 2012:
Dayhike at the River
Canyon Trail in
the Snake River Canyon.
We will meet at the IOA
Hall
at 9:30 AM,
then caravan to the trailhead. Along the way, we will make a stop at the
northeast end of the Lowe's Meridian parking lot (9:50 AM), where west
valley residents can join us. The drive will take roughly one hour. The hike
is a relatively easy 3.4 mile round-trip outing. The trail is located in the
heart of the Snake River Birds of Prey Area, which is home to one of the
densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Bring your
binoculars! Our destination will be an abandoned basalt-stone cabin that is
a remnant of an old gold mining community. Author Cort Conley tells the
story of one of the residents of this former community, Doc Hisom, in his
book, "Idaho Loners". Be sure to bring extra layers of warm clothes, water
and a lunch. For
