Feb 11, 2012:
Dayhike at the River
Canyon Trail in
the Snake River Canyon.
We will meet at the IOA
Hall at 9:30 AM,
then caravan to the trailhead. Along the way, we will make a stop at the
northeast end of the Lowe's Meridian parking lot (9:50 AM), where west
valley residents can join us. The drive will take roughly one hour. The hike
is a relatively easy 3.4 mile round-trip outing. The trail is located in the
heart of the Snake River Birds of Prey Area, which is home to one of the
densest populations of nesting raptors in the world. Bring your
binoculars! Our destination will be an abandoned basalt-stone cabin that is
a remnant of an old gold mining community. Author Cort Conley tells the
story of one of the residents of this former community, Doc Hisom, in his
book, "Idaho Loners". Be sure to bring extra layers of warm clothes, water
and a lunch. For
